Dog Harness & Collar Size Guide: Find the Perfect Fit

Getting the right size is essential for your dog's comfort and safety. A properly fitted harness and collar will keep your pet secure without restricting movement or causing discomfort. Follow our simple measuring guide below to ensure the perfect fit.

How to Measure Your Dog

What You'll Need:

  • A soft measuring tape (like a tailor's tape)
  • Your dog standing in a natural, relaxed position
  • Treats to keep them still and happy!

Key Measurements:

1. Chest Girth (Most Important for Harnesses)
Measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs. This is typically the largest part of the ribcage. The tape should be snug but not tight - you should be able to fit two fingers between the tape and your dog's body.

2. Neck Circumference (For Collars)
Measure around the base of the neck where the collar naturally sits. Again, ensure you can fit two fingers between the tape and your dog's neck for comfort and safety.

Sizing Chart

Use the chart below to find your dog's size based on their measurements. If your dog falls between two sizes, we recommend sizing up for comfort, especially for growing puppies or dogs with thick coats.

Fitting Tips

Harness Fit:

  • The harness should sit snugly but not restrict breathing or movement
  • You should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog's body
  • Check that the chest strap sits behind the front legs, not in the armpits
  • The back strap should sit flat across the shoulders without riding up
  • All straps should be adjusted for a custom fit

Collar Fit:

  • The collar should be snug enough that it won't slip over your dog's head
  • You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the collar and neck
  • Check the fit regularly, especially for growing puppies

Between Sizes?

If your dog's measurements fall between two sizes, consider these factors:

  • Size up if your dog has a thick coat, is still growing, or prefers a looser fit
  • Size down if your dog is lean, has a thin coat, or tends to slip out of gear
  • Contact us if you're unsure - we're happy to help you choose!

Special Considerations

Puppies: Measure frequently as they grow quickly. Consider sizing up to allow for growth, but ensure current safety and comfort.

Barrel-Chested Breeds: Breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Staffies may need special attention to chest girth measurements.

Deep-Chested Breeds: Greyhounds, Whippets, and similar breeds may need a size based more on chest girth than weight.

Thick Coats: For dogs with heavy coats (Huskies, Samoyeds, etc.), measure with the coat in its typical condition and consider sizing up.
